A mole does not always need to be removed. Some are harmless, while others may need closer assessment if they have changed in size, shape or appearance, or have become repeatedly irritated.
At Aventus Clinic, we assess moles for patients across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire, including Trumpington, Cherry Hinton, Chesterton, Newnham, Histon and Girton. Your clinician will examine the mole and may use dermoscopy to assess features that are not easily visible to the naked eye.

A changing or unusual mole should be assessed rather than assumed to be harmless. If your clinician finds features that need further investigation, they’ll explain the findings and discuss whether monitoring, a biopsy or removal is appropriate.
Not every unusual-looking mole needs immediate removal. Where appropriate, your clinician may recommend monitoring and follow-up.
If the initial assessment cannot establish a diagnosis, a biopsy may be recommended to obtain tissue for examination.
Where tissue is removed, it can be sent to a specialist laboratory for histological examination to help establish the diagnosis.
If melanoma is a concern, your clinician will explain the findings and discuss the appropriate next steps and referral pathway.
