Laser Light Therapy

Hair loss can be extremely upsetting and distressing. Although we often associate it with ageing, it can also be the product of stress, illness, medication, weight loss, or dietary factors. Hair loss pills and medicines are available, but these are often accompanied by unwanted side effects, whilst hair transplants are invasive and can be painful. Laser light therapy offers a safe, painless solution, as this treatment uses the simple power of red light to stimulate hair growth and replenish your head of hair.

What Is Laser Light Therapy?

Laser light therapy is a comfortable, cost-effective laser treatment for hair loss. The procedure is sometimes referred to as low-level laser therapy because the lasers are used on a low level, is a painless procedure, and far less invasive than other hair loss treatments.

It can be used to encourage hair growth in both men and women, provided that the hair loss that the patient suffers from is on a diffused scale and only partial, such as those who are experiencing pattern baldness, a receding hairline, bald spots or thinning.

How does Low Level Laser Therapy for Hair Loss work?

Devices called diodes, consisting of high-power LEDs, are placed close to the patient’s head. These emit restorative red light, as well as near-infrared light, which is directed towards the patient’s scalp. Although the diodes emit light, they do not emit any heat, so there is no risk of skin burning. The red light encourages blood flow to the scalp, which increases the levels of nutrients and oxygen being fed to the hair roots, stimulating growth.

Additionally, the light encourages the cells in the scalp to produce a chemical called triphosphate (ATP), which converts into another chemical, called adenosine monophosphate (AMP), inside the hair follicle. The latter chemical (AMP) stimulates metabolic processes which release energy, which your hair then uses to grow. As a result, a new growth phase begins, resulting in thicker and fuller hair.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Light Therapy?

Laser treatments for hair loss are suitable for both men and women who suffer from pattern baldness or partial hair loss. Patients who are taking medications or products which are photosensitising are not suitable for laser light therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure takes between 10 to 20 minutes to complete.

There is no downtime required. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately after their hair loss laser treatment.

To achieve thicker and fuller hair, patients should have one to three treatments (of 10 to 20 minutes each) a day, for three to five days a week. After four months, this can be reduced to two daily sessions, one to three times a week. After nine months have passed, patients can expect to see significant hair growth.

Laser light therapy is a non-invasive, painless treatment for hair loss. Clinical studies have shown that patients who have undergone laser hair regrowth treatments for at least nine months experienced significant improvement in both hair growth and the thickness of their hair, without any serious adverse side effects.

Laser light therapy is not known to cause any serious side effects. Occasionally, exposure to red light can lead to redness in the site which is being treated. This is not the same as a burn from the sun, as sunburn is the consequence of overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, and low-level laser therapy for hair loss does not expose patients to UV light. The redness in the skin may be somewhat uncomfortable but will disappear quickly.

Prices for low-level laser light therapy begin at £150.
