An eyelid cyst is a benign, non-cancerous lump that develops on or under the skin of the eyelid. It can form on the upper or lower eyelid and vary in size, firmness, and texture. Common types include chalazions, sebaceous or epidermoid cysts, and milia. Most eyelid cysts are painless and slow-growing, though they may cause swelling, irritation, or cosmetic concerns.

Your eyelid cyst removal is done as a minor procedure under local anaesthetic. A clinician will gently evert (turn) the eyelid, make a small incision, and remove the cyst’s contents using curettage or excision. This helps drain the blockage while minimising visible scarring, because the cut is usually made on the inner surface of the lid.

The most common method is incision and curettage (I&C): after numbing the eyelid, a specialist clamps the lid, turns it inside out, and makes a tiny cut on the inside to remove the cyst. In some cases, if the cyst is recurrent or large, they may fully excise the cyst, removing its capsule to reduce the likelihood of it coming back.

Because the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, you shouldn’t feel pain, though you may experience pressure or stretching when the lid is clamped. After the anaesthetic wears off, there may be mild discomfort or a sensation of the eyelid being tender, but this usually resolves quickly.

The actual surgical procedure typically takes around 15–30 minutes, depending on the size and location of the cyst. You should be able to go home the same day.

Yes, there is a chance of recurrence. Even after successful removal, the underlying gland (e.g., meibomian gland) can become blocked again. Recurrence rates vary, which is why continued eyelid hygiene is important.

Cyst Types

Which Eye Cysts Can We Remove at Aventus Clinic?

Our specialists safely treat all common types of eyelid and eye cysts. Procedures are designed to minimise scarring, reduce the risk of recurrence, and provide a comfortable, professional experience.

Chalazion (Meibomian Cyst)

A chalazion forms when an oil gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. It is usually firm, painless, and slow-growing, though it can occasionally become tender or swollen if inflamed. Chalazions can appear on the upper or lower eyelid and may affect vision if they grow large.

Epidermoid / Sebaceous Eyelid Cyst

These cysts develop from blocked hair follicles or sebaceous (oil) glands in the eyelid skin. They are generally painless and smooth, forming small lumps under the skin. Over time, they may enlarge, become noticeable, or occasionally inflame, but professional removal is straightforward

Dermoid Cyst

A dermoid cyst is a congenital cyst present from birth. It may contain skin, hair follicles, or other tissue, and often appears near the eyelid or eyebrow. While usually harmless, dermoid cysts can become more prominent with age and may require specialist removal.

FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. It’s considered a safe and routine minor surgical procedure. Risks are low but can include: bruising, mild swelling, infection, or, very rarely, scarring. At Aventus Clinic, our experienced clinicians use gentle, precise techniques to minimise risk and support a smooth recovery.

An eye cyst, or eyelid cyst, typically appears as a small, round or oval lump on the upper or lower eyelid. Most cysts are painless, slow-growing, and harmless. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • A visible lump or bump on the eyelid
  • Swelling or puffiness around the eye
  • Tenderness or mild discomfort if the cyst becomes inflamed
  • Redness of the surrounding skin
  • Occasional blurred or distorted vision if the cyst presses on the eye
  • Firm or soft texture, depending on the type of cyst
  • Recurrence or changes in size or appearance, which may require professional assessment

No GP referral is required for treatment at Aventus Clinic. You can book a direct consultation with our specialist team.

After the procedure:

  • The eye is usually padded for a few hours.
  • Bruising or swelling may be present for a few days, and sometimes mild soreness, but this typically subsides within a week to two.
  • You’ll be given antibiotic ointment to apply to the eyelid to reduce infection risk.
  • You should avoid contact lenses for around a week if the procedure was more invasive.

Yes, in fact, many procedures use an incision on the inner surface of the eyelid (the conjunctival side) to minimise visible scarring on the outer eyelid skin.

Often, no external scar is visible because the incision is made inside the eyelid. There may be temporary swelling or bruising, but this typically resolves in the weeks following surgery.

At Aventus Clinic, private cyst removal starts at £295. For eyelid or eye cyst removal, pricing varies depending on the type and size, so please contact us for a personalised quote and to book your assessment.

You should consider seeing a specialist if the cyst has persisted for more than a few weeks despite warm compresses and proper eyelid hygiene, if it is affecting your vision or is large enough to press on the eye, if it has recurred multiple times, or if you are concerned about the lump and want a professional diagnosis and personalised treatment plan at Aventus Clinic.
