Dr Suhail Alam - Medical Director

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce or reshape the labia minora, and sometimes the labia majora. It can relieve discomfort caused by enlarged or uneven labia, improve personal hygiene, and enhance the appearance of the genital area. The procedure is tailored to each patient’s anatomy and goals, whether for functional or aesthetic reasons.

Women who experience discomfort during everyday activities, such as walking, cycling, wearing tight clothing, or engaging in sexual activity, may consider labiaplasty. It may also be sought by individuals who feel self-conscious about the size, shape, or symmetry of their labia, aiming to improve confidence and quality of life.

The most frequently used techniques are the “trim” method, which removes excess tissue along the edge of the labia, and the “wedge” method, which removes a triangular portion of tissue from the central part of the labia to reduce bulk while preserving natural edges. In some cases, labia majora reduction, liposuction, or fat grafting may also be considered. The choice of technique depends on individual anatomy and the desired outcome.

During your consultation, a specialist will review your medical history and examine the labia, assessing size, shape, symmetry, and any abnormalities. The surgeon will discuss your goals, whether functional or cosmetic, and explain the surgical options, expected outcomes, potential risks, and recovery process. This helps determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Most labiaplasty procedures take between one and two hours. The duration varies depending on whether the labia minora, labia majora, or both are addressed, and the specific surgical technique used.

RECOVERY

Your Labiaplasty Recovery Timeline

Here’s what you can expect after your labiaplasty procedure, from the initial healing phase to the final results.

First 48 Hours – Initial Healing

After surgery, expect some swelling, tenderness or mild discomfort. It is important to rest and avoid pressure or friction on the area. You may use cold compresses, and gentle movement such as short walks is encouraged to help circulation.

First 48 Hours – Initial Healing

Days 3 to 7 – Early Recovery Phase

Most patients can begin moving around normally at home. Pain and discomfort typically lessen, though you may still experience swelling or bruising. Many people feel well enough to return to light work or desk jobs within a week depending on their job’s demands.

Days 3 to 7 – Early Recovery Phase

Weeks 2 to 4 – Gradual Improvement

Healing progresses and swelling should reduce significantly. Dissolvable stitches, if used, usually begin to settle around this time. Light activities and everyday tasks become more comfortable. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting or sexual activity until cleared by your surgeon.

Weeks 2 to 4 – Gradual Improvement

Weeks 4 to 6 – Return to Routine Activities

Around this stage, many patients are ready to resume regular daily routines. Most forms of exercise excluding high-impact or strenuous workouts and normal clothing can often be reintroduced. The area continues to heal and sensation gradually returns.

Weeks 4 to 6 – Return to Routine Activities

6 to 12 Weeks – Healing and Final Results

By 6 to 12 weeks, most of the swelling is gone, incision lines begin to soften, and the final shape becomes more apparent. Scar tissue settles and the area becomes more comfortable, with a smoother and refined appearance. Full healing and final results may continue to improve for several months.

Have any question?

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The tissue that is surgically removed does not regenerate. However, natural changes over time, such as ageing, weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, or pregnancy, may affect the appearance of the labia in the future.

As with any surgery, labiaplasty carries potential risks including bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, visible scarring, asymmetry, over- or under-correction, altered sensation, pain during intercourse, and, in rare cases, the need for revision surgery. Discussing these risks with your surgeon is essential to ensure informed consent.

Most patients retain normal sensation following surgery, and some even report increased comfort during daily activities. However, there is a small risk of altered sensation due to nerve involvement, which is why precise surgical technique is crucial.

Preparation may include avoiding smoking, adjusting certain medications that affect bleeding or healing, and ensuring overall good health. Patients should also arrange transport home, as driving is not recommended immediately after surgery. Specific preoperative instructions will be provided by your surgeon.

Incisions are made strategically, often along natural folds, to minimise visible scarring. Over time, scars generally fade and become less noticeable, although some minor scarring is expected as part of the healing process.

It is normal to experience swelling, mild soreness, or bruising in the labial area. These effects usually peak within the first 48 hours. Applying cold compresses and resting can help ease discomfort. Wearing loose, breathable clothing is recommended.

Your surgeon may advise over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol. Prescription pain medication can be given if needed. Avoid medications that increase bleeding risk unless instructed by your surgeon.

Loose, cotton underwear and clothing help reduce irritation and prevent pressure on the surgical area. Avoid tight or synthetic fabrics in the first few weeks after surgery.

Dissolvable stitches usually settle within 2 to 4 weeks. Keep the area clean and dry, follow your surgeon’s advice for antiseptic washes or ointments, and avoid touching the site unnecessarily.

Sexual activity should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks, or until your surgeon confirms the area is sufficiently healed, to prevent infection or damage to the stitches.

Low-impact exercise, such as walking, can usually resume after a week. Avoid high-impact activities, running, or heavy lifting for at least 4 to 6 weeks, or until cleared by your surgeon.

Temporary numbness or increased sensitivity in the labial area is common. These sensations typically improve gradually over several weeks as nerves recover.
