Bowen’s disease is most common in older adults and can often be mistaken for eczema or other persistent skin conditions. If you have concerns about your own skin or that of an elderly family member, early assessment can help provide an accurate diagnosis and guide the most appropriate treatment.

Bowen’s disease is an early form of non-melanoma skin cancer that often develops on sun-exposed skin and can resemble eczema or psoriasis. Most commonly diagnosed in adults over 60, it remains confined to the outer layer of the skin, although around 3–5% of untreated lesions may progress to invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
People with a persistent red, pink or scaly patch of skin that does not heal should consider a specialist assessment. Bowen’s disease commonly develops on sun-exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, hands and lower legs, but can occur elsewhere on the body. Assessment may also be appropriate for lesions previously thought to be eczema, psoriasis or other skin conditions that have not responded as expected to treatment.
Bowen’s disease often appears as a well-defined red, pink or scaly patch that gradually enlarges over time. The affected area may be dry, crusted or slightly raised and can sometimes resemble eczema or psoriasis. In some cases, the lesion may become thicker, develop a lump, ulcerate or start bleeding, which may require further investigation.
Treatment recommendations depend on factors such as the size, location and characteristics of the lesion. Because Bowen’s disease does not usually resolve on its own and has the potential to progress, specialist assessment is recommended to determine the most appropriate management approach.
From diagnosis through to recovery, our team provides consultant-led treatment and follow-up care for suitable Bowen’s disease lesions.
Your clinician will assess the lesion and discuss the most appropriate treatment options.
Dermoscopy may be used to examine the lesion in greater detail and guide treatment planning.
A biopsy may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis and rule out invasive SCC.
Suitable Bowen's disease lesions may be treated or removed depending on the diagnosis, location and extent of the lesion.
Samples are sent for histological analysis. We'll explain the results, provide aftercare advice and discuss any recommended follow-up.

Bowen’s disease often appears as a persistent red, pink or scaly patch that does not heal. If a lesion remains for several months or gradually enlarges, specialist assessment may be recommended.
Your specialist will examine the lesion and discuss the most appropriate treatment options based on its size, location and clinical features.
Many lesions gradually increase in size over time and may become more noticeable if left untreated.
The affected area may appear dry, flaky, crusted or rough to the touch.
Some lesions can become itchy, sore or irritated, although many cause few symptoms.
A persistent patch that does not improve with moisturisers or routine skin treatments should be assessed.
Bowen's disease most commonly develops on areas affected by years of sun exposure, including the face, scalp, ears, hands and lower legs.
Following treatment, we’ll explain your procedure outcome, provide aftercare advice and discuss when to expect your histology results. Once available, your specialist will review the findings with you and explain whether any further treatment or follow-up is recommended.
For many patients, no additional treatment is required, although ongoing skin checks may be advised for those with significant sun damage, multiple skin lesions or a history of skin cancer.
